What I stand for
Our country is in a bad way, and our political system is in crisis. The economic model that has endured throughout my lifetime - and I was born in 1980 - has run out of road. And that is not all: from mass immigration to declining birthrates we face serious social problems and a crisis of confidence in our culture.
The party system has failed to rise to the challenge. A political consensus that continued to uphold liberal ideology - long after its failures had become apparent to everybody outside a small and very fortunate elite - is yet to be replaced.
My own party, the Conservatives, are lucky to have survived the 2024 general election, after establishing an immigration system that encouraged annual net migration of almost one million people. The Labour Party has already shown it lacks the ideas and leadership the country needs.
Our only road to recovery is to be unsparingly honest about where we are. And that, I believe, will take us to the need for radical change. We cannot, for example, go on consuming and importing more than we produce and export. Britain does not make, do or sell enough of that the world needs, nor even enough of what we consume.
We need to industrialise, and to do that we need completely different policies on everything from energy to international trade. And we need to become much more forthright in our defence of our culture - the shared identity and common norms that help us to recognise familiarity in strangers and put our trust in one another.
Decline is not inevitable. Those things that made this the greatest country in the world are still there. And those places, stories, moments, memories, music, literature, habits and manners that add up to our national character and culture are still there too. With the right ideas, and leadership, I know Britain will rise again.
